I have seen comments about WAN miniport drivers both in the Microsoft Community Forums and on other discussion sites. I thought it worth recounting my recent painful experience and what seems to be the simplest solution.

For reasons too long to recount I have had internet connection issues. The ones relating to my router ansd isp are not relevant here and my connection is fairly reliable now. However, in amongst the earlier problems I also had loss of internet which seemed to be caused by the wired ethernet connection to the router. Sometimes I had to disconnect the ethernet cable and it would clear the fault. Sometimes going to 'Network settings' and running the problem solver would cure it but other times it would claim I had a missing ethernet cable. I have a a tester and it shows the cabling is all connected. But just as another complication to this story, we had five months of building work last year and during it I got the electrcian to tidy my fixed wiring and bury the ethernet cable in the wall. So, despite the test showing all cables as OK I thought maybe I had an itermittent fault in one of my connections but visual inspection showed no obvious damage from the building work. Then this week the internet was all but unusable as the 'Network Internet Access' indicator (bottom RH corner of the screen) was going on and off like a lighthouse and eventually showing the red cross of internet death.

Wide Area Network (WAN) Miniport driver is handy driver software that enables alternative network connection methods in your Windows computer. But what if you come across issues with your WAN Miniport driver?

By this time I began to suspect a fault in my PC and as a first step went to device manager intending to unistall and re-install the Realtek network adapter driver. Then I discovered the family of WAN minport drivers I have never seen before. How they arrived I know not. I have seen claims they are always there and normally hidden unless you go to 'View' and enable 'Show hidden Devices'. I strongly dispute that claim because the default setting in Windows to to hide hidden devices and files. To confirm this I enabled 'Show hidden devices' and some others then appeared so the miniport drivers do not seem to fall into Windows 'hidden' class.

As I had not ever had such drivers in the past I decided to banish them to obscurity by deleting them and that seemed to improve matters. But lo and behold, after a restart they reappered and my ethernet connection went crazy again. Searching what others have done I discovered you can kill these drivers by delving into Regedit and changing keys but this looked frightening and knowing my recent luck would have caused other problems
